Child is nature's most benevolent creation. The child is not just a miniature adult but a dynamic organism undergoing constant mental, physical & emotional changes.

"Pediatric dentistry is an age defined specialty that provides both primary and comprehensive, preventive and therapeutic oral healthcare for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special healthcare needs." (AAPD, 1999)

The aim of the Pedodontics department is to maintain the healthy mouth from infancy that will develop healthy milieu for the permanent dentition to develop. Various treatment procedures like maintaining oral hygiene by oral prophylaxis, atraumatic restorative treatment and pediatric endodontic are performed in the department so that the sound healthy primary teeth are maintained which play a very important role in children life as they help in mastication, esthetics and phonetics as well as preserve space for permanent dentition.

The uniqueness of this department is it concentrates on dental management of patient with cleft lip and cleft palate, management of children with systemic diseases, managing physically and mentally subnormal children of the society, occlusal guidance and early treatment of developing malocclusion by preventing various harmful oral habits, management of traumatic injuries of teeth and surrounding tissues of young children and minor surgeries like extraction, pericoranal flap surgery, operculectomy etc. Many parents do not recognize the importance of restoring the primary dentition. Pediatric dentistry can play a vital role in the dental development of the young child by providing natural space maintainers for the permanent teeth and by instilling in the child a positive attitude towards oral health.

Approximately 5800-6300 child patients are treated in our department every year. The department conducts school dental health programmes in and around Guntur district. Till date 51 school dental camps were conducted starting from July 2006 covering around 14000 children.
