| Orthodontics - Deparment of Orthodontics |
Orthodontics includes the study of growth and development of the jaws and face particularly, and the body generally as influencing the position of teeth; study of action and reaction of internal and external influences on the development and the prevention and correction of arrested and perverted development (British Society for Study of Orthodontics, 1922).
Orthodontics is the first recognized specialty field within dentistry. Currently orthodontics is taught in the third and final years of the under graduate course.
A full time three year course is offered for the post graduates, which would enable them to register and practice as Orthodontists.
Orthodontists would deal with common to severe malocclusions (bad bites), various facial deformities and growth modulations wherever required.
Orthodontic treatment would vary from mere dental movements to skeletal corrections either by using extra-oral head gears, implants, and other anchorage devices or by orthognathic surgeries.
An orthodontist would perform at full throttle with all training in Anthropology, Genetics, Growth & Development, clinical orthodontics, practical wire bending and surgical planning of orthognathic cases.
Recent advances in the field are 3D constructions and predictions of the face using orthodontic softwares, invisible aligners, lingual/invisible braces, patient specific customized orthodontics and newer force systems. |
