Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a branch that deals with diagnosis ,surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and the defects of human jaws , oral cavity and associated structures.

The field of oral and maxillofacial surgery has evolved through the ages .From extracting teeth by tying a thread around the tooth to refined techniques of today , the field has come long way. Pioneers like LISTER in the practice of asepsis, WELLS in the introduction of anaesthetic techniques , BELL in the field of Orthognathic surgery, GILLE and CHAMPY in the treatment of facial fractures have established a scientific basis to oral and maxillofacial procedures.

In the present day context oral and maxillofacial surgery encompasses various treatment/surgical procedures starting from simple teeth extractions, surgical removal of impacted teeth, cysts and tumours resection and reconstruction, facial bone fractures , TMJ abnormalities, various facial neuropathies, facial aesthetic surgery and distraction osteogenesis.
