MDS Curriculum three-year course in Public Health Dentistry
Structures , training Scedule

1) First year MDS

  • 5 seminars in basis sciences subjects
  • Case-history taking, learning different criteria, and instruments used in various oral indices including W.H.O. proforma
  • Carrying out school dental health education and other school based preventive programmes
  • Visit to water purification plants and sewage treatment plants, milk dairy, primary health center and submitting reports.
  • To conduct 10 journals clubs
  • Basic training in computers
  • Library dissertation work

2) Second year MDS:

  • 10 seminars in dental public dentistry topics
  • assessing oral health status of various target groups of population planning. Dental manpower and financing dental health care for the above groups.
  • Planning comprehensive oral health care for school children.
  • Planning international dental care for school children
  • Use of preventive measures such as topical application of fluoride and art and fissure sealants 10 cases each .
  • Submission of minimum of 2 term papers on a selected topic.
  • Asserting and guiding final BDS students during their clinical posting, field programmes and health education.
  • Taking lectures for IIIrd year BDS students on selected topics
  • Conducting 10 journal clubs

3) Third year MDS:

  • Seminars on recent advances in preventive dentistry
  • Critical evaluation of scientific articles on minimum of 10 articles.
  • Exercise on solving community health problem a minimum of 10 problems
  • Practice of epidemiological indices used in public health dentistry
  • Dental health education training of schoolteachers, social workers health workers, posting at dental satellite centers.
  • Completion and submission of dissertation

Before completing the 3 rd year MDS. A student must have attended two national conferences, presenting two scientific papers, publication of article in a journal.

Course Content

  1. Introduction: Introduction to Dentistry, Definition of Dentistry, History of Dentistry, Aims Objectives and Scope of Dentistry, course content.
  2. Public Health: Definition, concepts and philosophy of public health, history of public health in international and in India, Terminology used in public health.
    1. Definition of health, concepts and philosophy of health, health indicators, community and its characteristics and relation to health
    2. Definition and concepts of disease, multifactor causation, natural history of disease, risk factors, disease control and eradication, evaluation and causation, infection of specific diseases, gum disease, vaccines and immunization.
    3. Definition of Health, concepts and philosophy of public health, history of public health in the local and in India, terminology used in public health
    4. Definition and aims of epidemiology, general principles, methods in cpidemiology, descriptive, analytical, experimental and classic epidemiology of specific diseases, new knowledge regarding ethical aspects. Some general idea of methods of investigating chronic diseases, mostly of non-infections nature, epidemic, endemic and pandemic. Ethical conversation in any study requirement and duties of epidemiologist, screening of diseases and standard procedures used.
    5. Environmental health: Impact of important components of the environment on health, principles and methods of identification, evaluation and control of such health hazards, pollution of air, water, soil, water purification, International standards of water, Domestics and industrial toxins, ionizing radiation, occupational hazards and oral health. Waste disposable, various methods and sanitation.
    6. Public health Education: Definition, aims, and principles of education, health education methods, health education models, and planning health education programme.
    7. Public Health Administration system in India
    8. Ethics and jurisprudence
    9. Practice management: Definition and principles, types ethical and legal issues, Organization and administration of dental practice
    10. Nutrition in Public Health:- Study of science of nutrition, and its applications to human problem, nutritional surveys and their
    11. Behavioral Sciences: Definition and introduction. This accompanies psychology, sociology, and anthropology.
      1. Sociology: Social class, social group, family types, communities and social relationships, its effects on oral health.
      2. Psychology: Definition anxiety and p. intelligence, learning memory, attention, thinking, motivation, emotion, personalities.
      3. Anthropology: Anthropological methods, studies and child development and fear dentist and patient relationship, modeling and experiences.
    12. Hospital administration: Departmental maintenance, organizational structures, and types of practices, waste disposal.
    13. Health care delivery system: Central and state system, national oral health policy, national health programmes, primary health care, national and international health organization, DCA, IDA, Voluntary organizations.
  3. Dental Public Health
    1. Definition and concepts, differences between clinical and community health, hobbies and norms, critical review of current practice, dental problems of specific population groups such as chronically ill, handcrafted and institutionalized groups etc. Theory of dental public health.
    2. Epidemiology of all dental disorders: dental caries, gingival, periodontia, malocclusion, dental fluorosis, oral cancer, TMJ disorders, and other health related problems.
    3. Survey Procedures planning, implementation and evaluation of survey of oral diseases WHO basic oral health methods 1997, indices for dental diseases.
    4. Oral Biology and genetics: Introduction and definition, a though appreciation of the biological basis of health and disease, a detective study of cellular structure, Physiology and pathology, genetic counseling, GEN typing, DNA and RNA proteins, genetic approaches in the study of oral disorders.
    5. Delivery of Dental Payment of Dental Care: Department structure dental auxiliaries. (operational and non-operational) dental personal population ratios, incremental and comprehensive care, school dental health programmes, private practice and group practice oral health survey, national oral health policy, national and international system, a detailed study
    6. Payment of Dental Care: Prepayment, post-payment schedules, reimbursement plans, voluntary agencies, health insurance.
    7. Evaluation of quality of Dental Care: Problems in public programme, approved technique, aseptic maintenance, governmental control, cast control and analysis.
    8. Preventive Dentistry: Levels of prevention, public preventive programmes, prevention of all dental diseases, role of individual dentist and community in prevention, study of fluorides, epidemiological studies methods of fluoride supplements, de-fluoridation techniques, plaque control methods.
  4. Research Methodology and Dental Statistics
    1. Health informatics: Basic understanding of a computers and its components, Windows 2000, Microsoft office, preparation of slide and LCD projector, Multimedia knowledge and usage of photography.
    2. Research methodology-Definition, types of research, designing written protocol for research objectivity in methodology, quantification, records analysis.
    3. Bio-Statistics:- introduction, applications, uses and limitations of Bio-statistics in dentistry, collection of data, presentation of data, Measures of Central tendency, measures of dispersion, parametric and non-parametric tests of significance, correlation and regression, multivariate analysis sampling and sampling techniques-types, errors, bias, trails and calibration.
